5 Soft Skills Essential for Teamwork

In order to do any profession, you must first have certain hard skills, more precisely, technical expertise and professional knowledge. But hard skills without soft skills mean nothing.

As the Internet has made materials available to upgrade acquired knowledge, it is no longer enough to be an expert in a field. There are more and more sectors in companies that are team-oriented and require that there is communication in the teams and that good energy reigns in order for that same team to function. These skills are considered by some to be naturally ingrained, but they are actually practiced. Just think, how much did your first public appearance or speech in front of a larger group of people make you more nervous than some of your latest speeches? Or how bad were you at one of the first job interviews, and how much did you become skillful over time to present yourself in the right light?

Below we will instruct you in the essential soft skills as well as their importance in the professional world.

So What Are These Essential Skills…

What is specific for the development of soft skills is that, unlike hard skills, you cannot develop them by reading the literature but they require dedicated and active work on yourself. The development of these skills is important for both personal and professional development, but it is achieved by constant work on oneself and requires time. As companies have recognized the importance of soft skills, more and more of them are hiring professional trainers to ensure that employees have adequate development.

Communication Skills

Whether your position in the company requires constant interaction with people or occasional contact, communication with colleagues and superiors is inevitable. Communication skills require both sending messages and the skill of receiving them because communication is a two-way process. Due to this, it is important to work on assertiveness and active listening to the interlocutor.

  • Assertive communication – It is important to have an honest and open way of communication, so that positive and negative attitudes, ideas, and feelings can be expressed, but in a way that respects the interlocutor. Being assertive means being able to stand up for your own rights and the rights of others, but not to be aggressive or passive in agreements with others. This makes it easier to communicate with ‘difficult’ persons, better manage your own responsibilities, and reduce stress. Assertive communication achieves work goals, develops mutual respect among colleagues, and increases job satisfaction.
  • Active listening – Interacting with interlocutors means listening to them while they want to communicate something to you, but active listening means full focus on the other party and what they are telling you, and in accordance with the context, taking into account their wishes and needs. To develop this skill you need to learn how to maintain focus, prevent potential distractions, and how to stay focused on the verbal and nonverbal cues sent to you by your interlocutor. In this way, the number of conflicts is reduced, constructive feedback is given, and there is a greater willingness to respect other people’s opinions. This is an equally important skill for individuals who are part of a team, as well as for those who are in managerial positions.

Anger Management

We have all been angry once because we have experienced some frustration at work or we are simply dissatisfied with a decision made, but anger is a dysfunctional emotion. Anger blocks rational thinking and hinders an individual in achieving goals, but it also results in a negative impact on people in the environment. Anger often brings with it indignation, but anger is more intense, long-lasting, and leads to an irrational way of thinking. This is one of the emotions that are undesirable but also inevitable in the work atmosphere.

Although our temperament often dictates how we will deal with emotions, they can be controlled, more precisely, trained so that they don’t control us but we control them. Our suggestion is to sit down and remember some recent situations in which you were angry and how you reacted because only by actively analyzing your own behavior can you manage your emotions, as you will recognize them in time.

Team Work

It turned out that teams bring better results than individuals because of different opinions and common solutions. Working in a team contributes to the empowerment of individuals, a better working atmosphere, flexibility in work, but also responsibility. We all know how sports teams make good results – largely, thanks to synchronized teamwork. For those who are into betting, you know yourself that you choose exactly such teams to wager on at betting sites or casinos with sportsbooks. And yes, although humans are social beings, this does not have to be a guarantee of success. Not all individuals are inclined to work in a group, some prefer individual work.

For a good team, in addition to a positive atmosphere, it is good to feel like a part of the community and feel a certain belonging, but there are elements that require personal development. Cooperation, willingness to dialogue, taking initiative, and delegation are skills that can only be developed by working on oneself.

Time Management

Time is a limited resource and somehow we never have enough of it. Adequate scheduling of tasks on time is an effort for each individual. Individuals often have difficulty meeting deadlines, which are often broken or delayed. This can further affect teamwork as well as personal frustration.

That is why it is important to write down your obligations and plan the deadlines that will be before the deadline. In this way, a better balance is created between business and private life.

Leadership

It has long been believed that true leaders are born and that leadership cannot be learned. However, that theory has been scientifically abandoned for a long time. Today’s theory is that a good leader is created, not born.

Being a good leader means possessing all the above skills, but being able to motivate others and encourage them to take action through constant interaction. Often successful leadership blocks fear because managing others in a way that communicates with everyone in the right way is one of the most difficult tasks.

Improving Soft Skills = Development of Self-Efficacy

Although you cannot master soft skills by reading literature, you can do it by ‘reading’ yourself. The more you work on yourself and it gives results, the more efficient and more satisfied you will be with yourself and the environment, and eventually, it will lead to self-acceptance.
